Our floor is 4,000 PSI air-entrained concrete, engineered for Northern Illinois's 25–30 annual freeze-thaw cycles. Exterior commercial flatwork typically runs 4,500 PSI, and heavy-traffic surfaces like loading docks and industrial slabs step up to 5,000+ PSI with low water-to-cement ratios.
We build reinforcement around Grade 60 rebar — #4 bars for standard flatwork, #5 in heavy-load zones — supported on chairs in the lower third of the slab where tensile stress concentrates. We don't substitute wire mesh for structural reinforcement: mesh pulled up by hand during a pour ends up at random depths and can't reliably transfer loads.
Commercial slabs fail from below. We excavate to engineered depth, treat heavy clay sub-grades to prevent differential settlement under vehicle loads, and place 4–6+ inches of CA-6 crushed limestone compacted in lifts to specified density.
